Public art, especially sculptures, are an integral part of the urban landscape in many cities and have become so ingrained in our consciousness that we walk past them without acknowledging their existence. But these public sculptures represent our shared history and values and as such deserve a second glance, but they bring a unique way of interacting with art. Public sculptures are by nature interactive forms of art that have the power to create wonderful experiences for the viewers.
Public sculptures offer an engaging and pleasure filled way to interact with art. One can climb upon, pose next to, or simply touch public sculptures that are not allowed in museums. This project looks at the human interaction with the sculptures.
In witnessing the interactions of people with the public sculptures I thought of how we view ourselves in relation to these sculptures.
Our interactions with sculptures reveal our inner nature and thoughts without having to put into words what we are feeling. In situating such sculptures in the public sphere the artist is inviting a new way to interact with art on a level that is not thought of in a more traditional setting.
